From 2016 onwards, organisations will be required to monitor, manage and reduce electromagnetic exposure levels for their staff. This places a responsibility on the corporate IT and Health and Safety teams to ensure that the organisational environment is a safe and healthy place to work.
As members of the UK Health and Safety Executive Industry Working Group, we are working to develop best practice methodology and guidance related to Wireless Technology. EMF directive 35/2013 issued by the European Union central committee requires that Companies demonstrate compliance at an audit and control level, to the Action Level Values listed within the directive. Companies have three years to implement these controls.
Organisations may face legal issues that relate to Electromagnetic Radiation risk exposure for their employees. This may occur where employees have not been provided with safety guidance for using company issued equipment like mobile phones, headsets or wireless devices, or where staff are located in 'hot zones'. A number of High Court cases have already set legal precedents. These risks can be reduced or eliminated once understood. An EM Safety Survey Report will identify what actions are required.
This course will enable key members of the organisation to issue appropriate safety instructions or make technical change decisions, in line with the precautionary principles which have been published by regulatory authorities. It covers the history, cause-and-effect mechanisms, safety standards and best practice for deploying or handling devices which emit microwave radiation. The course content is summarised here.
